Obituary for Celia O. Bingham

Celia Onalee Collins Bingham, age 86, died at Pioneer Park in Lone Tree, Iowa on July 7, 2018. Celia was born on July 12, 1931, in Anamosa, Iowa, to Cecil H. and Onalee Bear Collins. She earned her RN degree at the University of Iowa, where she also met and fell in love with Dale S. Bingham. Celia and Dale were married on July 22, 1952 in Viola, Iowa. In 1965 Celia, Dale, and their children Stephanie and Dirk, moved to North Liberty. Celia resided in Johnson county since then.

Celia was a stay at home Mom until her children were in junior high. At that time she went back to work. She worked at Iowa City Care Center first as a nurse, then as the Director of Nursing. After that Celia worked at University of Iowa Hospitals as a nurse.

Celia will be remembered for her compassion and always taking care of others – children, patients, and her husband during his final 11 years. Celia had a passion for sewing, everything from clothing to quilting, to accessories. Many of these items were given as gifts or donated. Celia also enjoyed getting together with family and friends. She had a dry sense of humor that would appear out of nowhere, and she was a wonderful storyteller.

She loved boating with the family, and in later years with Dirk and Carole. Celia also loved to travel. Especially with Stephanie and Paul to places like the NE, NW, Florida, Nova Scotia, PEI and New Mexico. Her favorite travel experience was to the Albuquerque (NM) Balloon Fiesta, where the three of them crewed for friends with a hot air balloon. The captain took Celia up first that year. She loved the experience and often chuckled that Dale had not wanted her to go up.

Celia is survived by her daughter Stephanie (Paul) Bernhagen of The Villages, Florida; Dirk (life partner Carole Brown) Bingham of Riverside Iowa; brothers Alfred Collins of Groton, Connecticut; and Wilbur Collins of Viola, Iowa; sisters-in-law Vivian Collins of Central City, Iowa; Maria Collins of Webster, NY; and Joyce Hudgens of Urbandale, Iowa.

Celia was preceded in death by her parents; brother’s Warren Collins and Cecil Collins; and sisters-in-law Marjorie Collins and Barbara Collins.

The family will be having a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wilcox Cemetery in Linn county (Wilcox Cemetery Association, c/o Darwin Coleman, 23259 Fairview Road, Anamosa Iowa 52205), where Celia joins her husband and several generations of her family; or to Iowa City Hospice (1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52240).
