Clarence was born July 13, 1926 in Paullina, Iowa, the son of Hans and Anna (Lochner) Carlson. Growing up in Meriden, Iowa, he graduated from Meriden High School in 1945 and enlisted in the US Navy – serving as a 2nd Class radioman from 1944 to 1946 in World War II.

He married Mardella Denny November 25, 1951 in Hartley, Iowa. The couple made their home and raised their family in Livermore, Iowa from 1957 until 1985.

Clarence was a livestock buyer for Rath Packing Company in Waterloo for 30 years – retiring in 1984. He served as Councilman and Mayor of Livermore for 20 years. He held leadership positions with the Livermore United Methodist Church serving as Lay Leader and Treasurer.
Clarence was an active member of the Livermore Lions Club for more than 25 years acting as chairperson of many committees and President. Moving to Iowa City in 1985, he was a patient transport driver for UIHC and later worked as a courier for Hills Bank & Trust – retiring at age 85!
