Obituary for Inez Helen Gehrke

Inez H. Gehrke, 94, of Iowa City and formerly of Mendota passed away February 8, 2017 in Lantern Park Specialty Care, Coralville, IA.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00a.m., in the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota, IL with Rev. Michael Morrell officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.

Inez was born August 21, 1922 in Elgin, MN. to Martin and Elsie (Zolsdorf) Hasse. She married Erwin “Spinner” Gehrke September 12, 1940 in Minnesota.

Many would remember her behind the meat counter at Classon’s Grocery Store in Mendota. She moved to Iowa City 15 years ago to be near her only son, Del and his wife Judy. Inez and her husband, Erwin, who retired from Del Monte, traveled for 20 years enjoying the warm southern states during the winter then returning to the lakes of Minnesota in the summers until his untimely death. The Iowa City senior center introduced Inez to many new friends and filled her days with playing cards, bingo, exercise classes and trips to the casino. Her family was her top priority and she especially loved holidays with her grand children Michelle and Brad and his wife Christina, and great grandchildren, Jessica, Hunter, Chase and Otto. Over the years Inez has been an active member of the Lutheran church, VFW, Moose, American Legion, and Elks.

She is also survived by her sisters, Marjorie Tradup of WA., Dorthy Parker of IN., and sister-in-law Donna Hasse of Mendota.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995, five brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be directed to Mendota Area Senior Services.
