Obituary for Michael W. Daniels

Michael W. Daniels, 71, of Coralville, passed away Monday, December 4, 2017 at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM, Friday, December 8, 2017 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2017, from 4-6 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to National Cancer Institute (NCI), for therapy-related myelodysplastic syndromes research.

Michael was born November 20, 1946 in Washington D.C., the son of Clarence and Edna (Galton) Daniels. He grew up in Northern Virginia. Michael served in The United States Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He completed MACV RECONDO School in April 1967 and he was a member of the long-range reconnaissance patrol (LRRP) in Vietnam. He was also a medic, a radio operator, and a pistol instructor for the United States Army. After he was honorable discharged from the Army in 1969, he worked in various jobs. What he loved most was building boats in New England. He occasionally designed boats and dreamed of living at the seashore later in life. He met Noriko Abe when she was an international student in Virginia. He married Noriko on December 5, 1990 in Japan. He taught English in Japan, and studied online at the University of Colorado. They moved to the United States in 2002, and as Noriko started graduate study at The University of Iowa, he started to work as a long-haul truck driver to support her. He retired in the summer of 2010. In 2012, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He went through stem cell transplants, maintenance therapy, and numerous hospitalizations for infections. In October 2017, he was diagnosed with therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome, and rested from the fierce fight with the cancers on December 4, 2017. He and Noriko resided in Coralville for the past 15 years.

Michael is survived by his wife, Noriko; four siblings, Brian S. Wiley, Lance P. Daniels, Sandra Daniels and Eric P. Daniels.

My husband, Michael was a warm, fun-loving, yet quiet person. He believed in his senses and instincts. His determination was strong, and once he put his mind to something (to do), he pursued it to the end. And no matter what life threw at him, he never ran away, but faced and dealt with it as best he could. He was creative, and always did things his way. He loved music and movies. He was meticulous about the English language, and was a self-directed learner. Once, he figured out the structure of the Japanese dictionary by himself and that amazed me. He was a self-taught oil painter, who painted for others, at their request. He was genuine and kind, and was careful, and observant with regard to the safety and comfort of others. Michael, my best friend, my husband, I love you.

Our brother Michael took his journey in this life with integrity and honor. He opened a path for everyone around him to learn from example on how to be respectful, loving, kind, tender and generous. He was always there to help everyone. First and foremost he looked for the good in this life. He always put himself last and was always there for us, from the time he put our diapers on, to the time he taught us how to drive. He has earned his golden wings and the right to fly high and rest in peace. We love you always and forever and will miss you every day.
