Obituary for Richard "Dick" L. Duncan

Richard L. (Dick) Duncan, a longtime resident and businessman in Iowa City, died peacefully February 8 after a short illness, surrounded by his family. He was 89.

After moving to Iowa City from Cedar Rapids, he graduated from City High School in the class of 1946. He served two years in the U.S. Navy, graduated from the University of Iowa and worked for many years in the real estate business in Iowa City.

Dick personified the notion of a good man. He brought fairness and integrity to his business dealings; modesty, support and good humor to his friendships; engagement, a sense of play and a teaching of values to younger generations; and unswerving love to his family and especially his wife, Carolyn Duncan.

From 1959 to 1997 Dick was an owner and partner in the Duncan Agency, which was founded by his father. The firm expanded to become Duncan Matheson Lehmann Inc. and eventually was affiliated with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Professionals. He continued working into his 80s.

Dick served as president of the Iowa City Area Association of Realtors and received their Realtor of the Year Award. He was a member of the Noon Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Professional Investors and for more than 20 years was on the advisory board of the Delta Chi Fraternity.

He sang for decades with the Old Capitol Chorus, Iowa City’s chapter of barbershop singing. And a passion that gave him a lifetime of deep happiness was spending time with his fishing rod, “wetting a line” on the waters of a small pond in Iowa City, a quiet trout stream in Wyoming, or anything in between.

In addition to Carolyn, Dick’s surviving family includes his sons Scott Duncan and wife Marni of Healdsburg, CA; Peter Duncan and his wife Sheri Oleson-Duncan of San Diego, CA; daughter Melanie Holden and her husband Richard Holden of Kansas City, MO; and his twin brother Robert Duncan of Santa Rosa, CA.

His grandchildren are Kaitlin Duncan Santini and her husband Rob Santini of Santa Monica, CA; Catherine Duncan of Richmond, CA; Jennah Lintz of Pasadena, CA; Erin Oleson Dickson and husband Shane Oleson Dickson of San Diego, CA; Whitney Lupo and husband Chris Lupo of St. Louis, MO; and Brian Holden of Kansas City, MO.

His great-grand-children are Rumi Oleson Dickson, Cleo Oleson Dickson and Matthew Lupo. A memorial service for Dick Duncan will be planned for when the weather warms and the fish start to rise.
