Obituary for Antoinette Gascard Begin

Antoinette Gascard Begin, 93, passed away peacefully at Briarwood Healthcare on December 13th following a short illness.

Antoinette’s life will be celebrated with a visitation at 8:30 AM on Friday, December 21st, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 AM, with Father Robert Begin officiating. Antoinette will be put to rest with her husband Floyd in Oakland Cemetery.

Antoinette Gascard was born September 27th, 1925 in Louhans, France, the youngest of four sisters. She came from a family of judges, lawyers, and professors, was an avid reader and scholar of French, Latin, and Greek, and was highly accomplished in math. She graduated with a baccalaureate in Philosophy in 1944. Antoinette spent time in Lille studying the humanities and law and then took time off working, and taking cooking classes at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. She also spent time in England, studying at the University of Bristol and working as a nanny and on a potato farm to become fluent in English.

Antoinette continued her studies at the University of Nancy, graduating in law in 1953. She was to have started a teaching position at the French Institute of Edinburgh, Scotland, in a few months, a first step toward a position with U.N.E.S.C.O. In the mean time, she was a lawyer in Verdun for the American Forces under NATO, handling legal translations, interpreting French law for Americans, and handling contracts and negotiations. There she met Floyd Begin, who was a civil servant in logistics at NATO. They quickly fell in love, and Antoinette abandoned plans for Scotland.

They married in Nancy, France in 1955 and had three children, Laurence, Pierre, and Hélène. When the US armed forces left France in 1966, the family moved to Davenport, Iowa. Antoinette resumed studies at the University of Iowa and completed her Masters in French Literature in 1971 and continued on toward her Ph.D. During this time, she taught French at Marycrest College, Augustana College, and Central High school in Davenport. After two thesis advisors passed away, she decided to move on and focused on her third career as repairer and seller of antiques. She was active in a quilting bee as well as the French Conversation Club, and gave French lessons to adults and grandchildren alike.

She enjoyed preparing lavish meals for her family, Floyd’s international guests, and her friends and students. She and her husband Floyd relished vacations with their children, grandchildren and close family members and shared 60 years of marriage before Floyd passed away in 2015. At that time, she became a Briarwood resident and was considered a member of their family, charming everyone around her, giving advice, and making sure that they learned some French. We are thankful for the caring staff at Briarwood who took such good care of her and for Iowa City Hospice for helping her pass peacefully. She was a free spirit, always spoke her mind, and we will miss her dearly.

Antoinette was preceded in death by her parents Roger and Madeleine Gascard, her husband Floyd Begin, and her sisters Anne-Marie (Paul) Marotte, Jacqueline (Pierre) LePont, and Françoise (Henri) Lhomme. She is survived by her children Laurence (Clark) McFerren, Pierre (Lisa) Begin, and Hélène (Theodore) Donta, grandchildren André Begin, David McFerren, Analise Faulkner, Allie Begin, Sophie Anstreicher, Eric McFerren, Maxsam Donta and Nikolas Donta, and great grandchild Astrid McFerren.
