Obituary for David Clarence Dvorak

David Clarence Dvorak, 91, of Fairport, IA, beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 16, 2018 at his home. Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Saint Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Solon, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Peter & Paul Historical Foundation or Genesis Hospice Davenport.

Dave was born November 14, 1927 in Solon, IA to Clarence and Martha (Pavelka) Dvorak and grew up in Iowa City. Prior to his high school graduation he enlisted in the Navy. While on reserve duty he was drafted into the Army and served in Europe with the peacekeeping forces at the end of WWII. He married Shirley Alteneder in 1957. He worked for the Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company(now MidAmerican Energy) for over 40 years, retiring as Electric Distribution Supervisor. After retiring he married Barbara Jean DeTaeye in 1991 and they enjoyed wintering at their home in Florida and traveling the country. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church of Iowa City. Dave was an avid collector of insulators and antique tools. He loved hunting for treasures at auctions and in old buildings and barns. He enjoyed hosting his grandchildren in Florida during the winter and sharing his home along the Mississippi River with family and friends. He will be remembered for his kind, loving and easy-going personality and was a friend to all he met.

Dave is survived by his three daughters, Lisa Dvorak of Solon, IA, Anne (Paul) Otsuka of San Diego, CA, and Sarah Stanley of Solon, IA; 8 grandchildren, Stephanie, Diana, and Grace Howsare of Solon, IA; Jeremey Howsare of Earlsboro, OK; Katie and Emily Otsuka of San Diego, CA; and Jenna and Alex Stanley of Cedar Rapids, IA; his wife, BJ of Davenport, IA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews that were very special to him. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Paul Dvorak, Bernice Cahill and Marian Winkie.

Dave is also survived by his close friend and caretaker, Melanie Cook of Fairport, IA. The family thanks Melanie for providing him the wonderful opportunity to spend the last year of his life in his home on the river where he loved to be most, watching barges and wildlife. Thank you to the staff of Genesis Hospice for their loving care and support.

Dave was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
