Clemens was born on February 25, 1927, in Taunton, Minnesota and was raised in Granville, Iowa on the 240-acre family farm located in the northwest corner of the State.
Clemens was the oldest of 11. After completing high school Clemens worked on the farm for five years and then served in the Air Force in Oxnard, CA. for four years. At this time, he met and married Kathleen “Kay” Hemann on February 14th, 1953, and they returned to Iowa to pursue his undergraduate degree at Loras College in Dubuque. He graduated in 1958 and enrolled in the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa. Specializing in Pediatric Dentistry he received his DDS in 1963 and continued to get his Master’s Degree in 1965.
Dr. Full was invited to join the staff to teach Pediatric Dentistry in 1963 and was promoted to a full Professor in 1976. Clemens brought an unmatched work ethic to his outstanding career, a tremendous sense of patience with students, patients and family, and a unique sense of humor and joy.
Dr. Full was awarded four Outstanding Instructor awards during his tenure at the University of Iowa. He became the Director of the Hospital School Pediatric Dentistry department as well as the Postdoctoral Pediatric Dentistry program. Dr. Full enjoyed serving as both the President of the Iowa Society of Pediatric Dentistry and the Iowa Society of Dentistry for Children. Dr. Full was a member of the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry and was an esteemed Diplomate for Pediatric Dentistry.
In 1978 Clemens received a Personal Development Award which enabled him to conduct research at the University of London. He also was invited to speak at the 6th International Dental Congress in Egypt and later in his career to work with the dentists at the National University of Nicaragua.
The committees that Clemens served on through his career are too numerous to mention but suffice it to say he was devoted to his profession; the growth of new students and the patience he exercised with his young, pediatric patients. Clemens was also widely published with dozens and dozens of papers documenting his research.
Clemens had one personal passion, or hobby, and that was flying. Clemens was an IFR rated pilot and enjoyed sharing his hobby by taking his family across the country on vacations via a small plane. In retirement he enjoyed playing the saxophone in the New Horizon Band.
The cast of family and friends and the staff at Oaknoll will miss his terrific sense of humor, his unending smile and the sparkle in his blue eyes.
He is survived in death by his wife, Kay, also a resident at Oaknoll in Iowa City, sons David (Jan), Iowa City, Dennis (Lisa), McKinney, TX, and five grandchildren, Cameron, Kelsie, Carson, Colin and Marissa. He was preceded in death by three siblings in their childhood, his parents, Gertrude and Clemens, brothers Kenneth and Leslie and sister Audrey. Surviving are sisters Sandy in Gunnison, Colorado and Anita in Sioux City and brothers Lloyd in Sioux City and Allen in Beloit, Wisconsin.
