Obituary for Jacelyn A. "Jackie" Swinton

Jacelyn “Jackie” Ann Swinton, 64, of Coralville, passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at The Bird House, Hospice Home of Johnson County with family and friends at her bedside.

The family will greet friends Friday from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road in Coralville. A rosary will be recited at 3:30 pm Friday. A Memorial Mass will begin at 10:00 am, Saturday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville. Burial will be private in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo, Iowa. In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to the JS Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at UIHC which was established by Jackie in 2017.

Jackie was born December 8, 1954 in Waterloo, IA the daughter of Harold and Bernice (Herting) Swinton. She graduated from Columbus High School in Waterloo and received her training from St. Luke’s Methodist Hospital Nursing Program in Cedar Rapids.

Jackie was a registered nurse for 40 years, working at Schoitz Hospital in Waterloo for 8 years and then for 32 years at UIHC in Iowa City, 28 in the surgical intensive care unit. She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and was a University of Iowa Volunteer – working with the Survivors Group & Survivors Teaching Students.

Because of Jackie’s skills as a nurse, she was one of a half dozen UIHC personnel, and the only nurse, selected for training on artificial heart transplant procedures and equipment at the University of Arizona.
Jackie also oriented dozens of new nurses at UIHC and trained nurses in CPR procedures.

Jackie is survived by her mother, Bernice Swinton of Waterloo; two brothers, Dean Swinton (Juliet) of Waterloo, and Duane Swinton (Jan) of Spokane, WA; four nieces and nephews, Jennifer Williams (Greg) of Ridgewood, New Jersey, Nathan Swinton of Washington, D.C., Brandon Swinton (Teresa) of Chicago, IL, and Nisha Swinton of New York, NY.

Jackie was preceded in death by her father, Harold Swinton.

Special thanks to Dr. David Bender of UIHC for his care and treatment of Jackie during her 7 year battle with ovarian cancer and to Iowa City Hospice and the Bird House for their compassionate care of Jackie during her final days.
