Obituary for Mary Ann Nelson

Mary Ann Nelson, 75, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, February 4th at The Birdhouse Hospice Home of Johnson County in Iowa City.
Mary Ann was born June 19, 1943 in rural Osage, Iowa to Glenn and Clyll (Wilder) Decklever. She attended a one-room country school near the family farm until junior high. Mary Ann graduated from Osage High School. In 1964 she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Gary Erling Nelson. All who knew them witnessed a beautiful love story. An old friend said it best, “she never met another couple who had so much fun together”. On their 50th wedding anniversary, Gary told friends Mary Ann was a gift to him from God. Gary not only loved her, he adored her and wanted to spend eternity with her. Mary Ann looked forward to that time, ever to be together.
They were blessed with two daughters, Shawna and Angela (Jeffrey Wilson). Survivors also include, four brothers, Dale (Carol) Decklever, David (Darlene) Decklever, Kenny (Pat) Decklever, Don (Sue) Decklever; her sister, Glenda Bahnsen; three grandchildren, Chelsey (Dr. Kent Cabatingan), Garet (Samantha) and Greysen Germundson; great-grandson Jaxon; many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
In 1973, Gary built the house that Mary Ann had designed. The house was built in the oak woods in rural Mason City. This remained their home until 2005, when they retired to Mountain Home, Arkansas.
Mary Ann moved back to Marion, Iowa from Arkansas in 2015 to be closer to family. She was active in the Seventh Day Adventist Church where she attended home Bible study groups for over thirty years. Mary Ann volunteered with community outreach at her church and enjoyed having lunch with friends, playing Dominos, and a card game called Hand-and-Foot.
She enjoyed flower gardening, landscaping and bird watching. Gary and Mary Ann visited those in the hospital, often taking beautiful bouquets from her own garden. She loved taking quiet drives through the country side with Gary and frequenting antique shops and shows.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2014; her brother, Dean, and in-laws, Obert and Lola Nelson.
In accordance with her wishes a family committal service will be held at a later date at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery in rural Osage.
