Obituary for Raymond Edward Meyer

Raymond (Ray or Rudy) Edward Meyer, 69, of West Branch, passed away peacefully on January 1st, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 5, 2019, from 10 AM – 12 PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. A celebration of Ray’s life will begin at 12 PM. Burial will be at a later date in West Branch Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Meyer family to be distributed to charities.

Ray Meyer was born September 1, 1949 in Oelwein to John and Dolores (Quinn) Meyer. He grew up in Strawberry Point and moved to Iowa City in 1960. He graduated from Iowa City Regina High School in 1968 and worked as a gifted tradesman and construction worker his entire life.

Ray's construction career began with Wolfe Construction as a young teenager and he transferred to Red Hunzinger Construction as a young adult. Later in life, he worked for Paulsen Construction in West Branch as well as Streb, McComas-Lacina and Knutson Construction. His most famous, (as he would put it) construction projects included restoring the HHH residence in West Branch, overseeing the concrete construction of several grain processing facilities in Iowa, the University of Iowa incinerator at the Oakland facility, building the West Branch football field press box, schools in Blue Grass and Buffalo, and numerous home remodeling projects for family and friends. If you ever got the opportunity to ride (typically a very slow one) with Ray, he enjoyed pointing out all his finished projects around, what felt like every corner.

Ray's love of football, helping others and working with kids, led him to a volunteer coaching position at West Branch from 1988 to 1998 which gave him the opportunity to enjoy several district and state championships. He was definitely a BEARS fan in every sense of the word. He was loved and appreciated for his kind, gentle and generous support of his family and friends. He truly knew what it meant to love the simple things of life. After the loss of his son, Morgan in 1990, Ray volunteered as a big brother for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Iowa City.

When not working or coaching, he loved to go fishing with family and friends at Krall's pond and taught Sunday school at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in West Branch. He enjoyed working with his hands, living a fulfilling life in the country and the companionship of his dog, Sam. He worked hard, but always made sure to have a good time with the ones he loved the most. Like he always said best, "It'll all work out".

Ray is survived by his daughter, Maureen Meyer of Iowa City; grandchildren, Lillian and Noah; daughter’s fiancé, Weston Wellendorf; siblings, Mary (Joe) Utter, Joe Meyer and John Meyer, and former spouse, Jane Sheller.

He was preceded in death by his son, Morgan; parents, and brothers, Pat and Jim.

In honor or Ray, the family invites everyone to Shakespeare's Pub & Grill (819 South 1st Avenue, Iowa City) following the celebration of life for good food and a cold drink, just as he would have wanted it.
