Obituary for Robert V. Humpleby

Robert V. Humpleby, “Bob”,87, of Coralville, peacefully passed into Heaven at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, June 25, 2019.

Born January 19, 1932 in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Vernon and Zelma (Diller) Humpleby, Bob grew up in Muscatine and as a child worked in the family button factory. He graduated from Muscatine High School where he was known for his drawing skills and charging one piece of paper to create a drawing for friends. There he developed his love for fishing and entertaining with his “fish stories.”

He began his first career as a grocer and met and married Danetta M. “Dee” Rowe on May 10, 1952. Five days later he left for the army.
Bob served as a corporal in the US Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 and was a longtime member of the Iowa City VFW. He returned to his family and the grocery business. The couple moved their family to Iowa City in 1965. He always enjoyed his Hawkeyes and Cubs.

His second career was to join his brother Ed in the business of selling cookware. Bob was a born salesman and traveled rural Iowa during this time. After a number of successful years, he moved to his final career.

Bob became an insurance agent for Principal Financial Group for many years, retiring in 1996. His faith was a vital part of him and he was a 37 year member of Bethany Baptist Church in Iowa City and later was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church of Iowa City. He was a dedicated worker and had a heart to serve others as well as make them laugh.

Survivors include his son Jeff (Cindy) of Coralville; grandchildren, Josiah (Ashley), Luke, Anna Jo and a great-grandson on the way; brother, Ed Humpleby (Twyla) of Coralville; sister Linda Wells (Kenneth) of Muscatine, Iowa and ten nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
