She was born April 16th, 1925, the daughter of William and Alba (Hudachek) Fouchek of Lone Tree. She grew up on the Fouchek family farm and graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1942. As a child she desired to be a teacher so after graduation she enrolled at the Iowa State Teacher’s College in a special course designed for teaching in rural, one room country school houses. She graduated from college in 1943 and began her teaching career. She taught in Pleasant Valley, Newport, and Scott Township schools. She also served as the secretary for the Johnston County Rural Teacher’s Association. During the summers she helped the war effort by working in a munitions factory.

On February 23rd, 1949 Pauline was united in marriage to James Flannery at Saint Mary’s Church in Iowa City. They began farming east of Iowa City in Scott Township. While on the farm, they raised their sons William, Kenneth, and Donald. Pauline was an avid gardener and grew beautiful flowers. She was an excellent cook. She enjoyed helping neighbors and playing cards. Pauline enjoyed photography and loved documenting all of her many travels.
In later years Pauline and Jim spent the winter months in Florida and Arizona. They retired from farming in 1991 and moved to Longmont, Colorado. On November 5th, 1993 Jim passed away and Pauline moved back to Iowa City. In 2013 she moved to Des Moines to be close to her family.

Pauline was a skilled writer and had a talent for writing rhyming poems for her family and friends. These poems would commemorate special occasions and good times. She composed her memoirs in writing as a keepsake for her family. She also liked to create scrapbooks and albums for her family. Her family cherishes these keepsakes. Pauline loved collecting shells from ocean beaches. She would create many wonderful crafts from these shells. She also enjoyed oil painting and ceramics. She gave her works of art to her family and friends. But above all, her first and foremost priority was her family.

Pauline was preceeded in death by her husband James; sons William and Kenneth; her parents William and Alba Fouchek; her sister Helen Waldschmidt; and her brother Harold Fouchek. She is survived by her son Don (Beth) Flannery and their children Patricia (Geoffrey) Gallop, Jessica Flannery, and Michael (Katharine) Flannery; daughter-in-law Susan Manning and her daughters Kathryn and Elizabeth Flannery; sister-in-law Marita McGurk; and many nieces and nephews in the Flannery, Fouchek, Walschmidt, McGurk, and Halsch families.
