Obituary for Virginia M Zeifert

VIRGINIA MAXINE ZEIFERT, age 94, passed away September 12, 2018 at Oaknoll Health Center in Iowa City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 PM on Saturday, September 15, at the Newman Catholic Student Center, 104 East Jefferson Street in Iowa City with Father Edward Fitzpatrick officiating. Visitation will be from 10 AM – 12 PM on Saturday, September 15. Interment will be Tuesday, September 18 at 1 PM at St. Joseph Cemetery, West Belmont Avenue, River Grove, Illinois with Deacon Gregory Zeifert officiating.

Virginia was born on October 31, 1923 in Fairmount, Illinois, to George Henry Krahling (d. 1928) and Lillian Mae Morecraft. She graduated from Pana, Illinois High School in 1942. Virginia began working at an ammunition plant before joining the WAVES, the women’s branch of the United States Naval Reserve.

She moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she met Edward Paul Zeifert. They married on July 13, 1946. Edward passed away in February 1979. Virginia worked at JCPenney’s for 28 years in Chicago before she retired. She moved to Iowa City in 2001 and volunteered at Mercy Hospital and Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP).

Virginia is survived by her children, Georgene (Charles) Lynch of Iowa City, Deacon Gregory Zeifert (Eileen) of Antioch, Illinois, Dr. Christopher (Anita) Zeifert of Hinsdale, Illinois; 7 grandchildren, William (Jennifer) Lynch of Portland, Oregon, Andrew (Sarah) Lynch of Wausau, Wisconsin, Edward (Rachel) Zeifert of Oswego, Illinois, Ryan Zeifert of Scottsdale, Arizona, Michael (Christine) Zeifert of Highwood, Illinois, Patrick Zeifert of Chicago, Illinois and Brian Zeifert of Seattle, Washington; 10 great grandchildren, Jack, Avia, Rachel, Ian, Ezra, Isaac, Molly, Brooklyn, Bradon and Kyle and many nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Velma Hagler; step father, George Dewey Lawler; step brother, Theodore Lawler, and step sister, Norma Scherrer.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be left to the Oaknoll Foundation, Newman Center Singers or Iowa City Hospice.
